Photography at Barton Court Estate by Forest & Flint

Barton Court Estate sits beside the River Kennet near Kintbury in West Berkshire. Its historic buildings, established gardens, parkland and chalk stream provide the setting for a constantly changing mix of people, work and outdoor life.

Much of the photography used throughout the Barton Court Estate website has been created by Patrick Newnham of Forest & Flint. Shot over several years and across the seasons, the resulting archive goes beyond conventional estate photography to document the landscape, people, activities and details that give Barton Court its character.

Documenting life at Barton Court

The approach is natural and documentary-led. Rather than constructing scenes for the camera, the emphasis is on photographing real moments as they happen: gardeners at work, anglers on the River Kennet, events around the estate, changing weather and light, and the quieter details that often say as much about a place as its buildings.

Over time, these individual photographs have become a visual record of Barton Court and a consistent library of original imagery for the estate’s website, marketing, editorial features, social media and wider communications.

Landscape, gardens and the changing seasons

Barton Court changes considerably throughout the year.

The gardens, parkland, woodland, river and historic buildings are photographed through different seasons, weather and light, from the first growth of spring through to the warmer colours of autumn and the quieter landscape of winter.

Alongside wider views of the estate are the smaller details: planting, wildlife, materials, tools and signs of the work taking place behind the scenes.

Together, these images tell a much richer story than a traditional collection of property photographs alone.

Fly fishing on the River Kennet

The River Kennet is an important part of life at Barton Court and a recurring subject within its photography.

This stretch of the Kennet is a chalk stream with clear water, abundant aquatic life and established fly fishing. Photographing it combines landscape and outdoor photography with the people who spend time on the river.

The aim is to capture what a day on the Kennet actually feels like: the landscape, changing light, concentration of the angler and details of rods, flies and equipment, rather than simply recording a catch.

It is an approach that sits naturally within the wider work of Forest & Flint: photographing people outdoors, immersed in an activity and connected to the landscape around them.

People, work and experience

Barton Court is a working estate, so the people who spend their time here are central to its story.

Photography covers the people who look after the gardens, grounds and river, alongside events, gatherings and other activities across the estate. Wherever possible, people are photographed doing what they would ordinarily be doing rather than recreating moments for the camera.

The result is photography built around atmosphere, experience and a sense of place, rather than simply documenting how somewhere looks.
